Do you know what you are or what it is that you are meant to do? Do you have a set purpose in life? Do you know what that special gift is that you have that you were just meant to share with others?

“and because he was of the same trade he stayed with them and worked, for they were tentmakers by trade.”—Acts 18:3

In reading the verses before Acts 18:3, we discover that Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. He met a Jew (Aquila) and his wife (Priscilla). They were tentmakers – so was Paul. This scripture just states straight to the point that because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked with them. Such a quick, simple statement. For me it jumped off the pages.

Have you listened to Beth Moore? I love to hear her messages. In one that I heard, Beth was discussing how she had been so touched by a gesture from a listener who out of gratitude sent Beth some knitted baby socks. The thing is, Beth doesn’t have babies. Yet, Beth loves the gift. Why? Beth explains that the woman who sent the gift told Beth that her husband had given her a hard time for sending Beth that gift. He asked her why she was sending Beth something she probably didn’t need. The woman said, “because that’s what I do.” …Because that’s what she does! There it is again. This person was so sure of what to do for Beth because she knew what she does.

You see, I don’t know if you have this problem or not. But, I am struggling with what it is that I am or do. Now, maybe your life has turned out just the way you envisioned it would. You are content or at least have a good idea of who you are and what you are to be doing in life for others. Or maybe you are like me.

For me, my life is nothing like I dreamed it would be. I grew up in a wonderful family and I went to college – War Eagle! So far, just as I imagined. But then things didn’t quite pan out as it was “supposed to” – or at least in my mind. I haven’t met Mr. Right yet and I never had kids. I’ve gotten an additional degree and had different jobs searching for the one that I just loved to perform – to find my niche. In the meantime, a couple of years ago my mom was diagnosed with and eventually lost her battle with the effects of cancer. And now recently, I’ve taken on the responsibility of being my dad’s primary caregiver as he battles his different illnesses and circumstances of growing older. None of this was in my plans for my life.

For Paul – making tents was what he did. It helped to determine what steps he took in his travels. He didn’t just pass through Corinth – he stayed and worked because he knew that was what he did – and it was what he was to do at that time. For this lady who knitted baby socks, she knew what she did for others so she did it. She didn’t think twice about it. She knitted them and sent them to Beth.

What do you do? Do you KNOW that’s what you are to do so you are doing it? That’s awesome if that’s the case. Praise God if He has you at that point in your life. Or, are you like me – and you’re just not sure?

My Prayer:

Please Lord, we want to be doing what you have put us on this earth at this time in history to be doing. What do I do? I thank you that you will make that clearer as I dig deeper into your Word. As I seek you – everything else will fall into place. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
